Looped Video of a Road

Roland Barthes' Theory: Hermeneutic Code

Related imageThe Hermeneutic Code refers to any element of the story that is not fully explained and hence becomes a mystery to the reader. The purpose of this is to typically keep the audience guessing, producing an enigma until the finale when all is revealed and all loose ends are tied off and a sense of closure is achieved.

This theory links to my looped video as I have created the enigmas of;
- Why is this a point of view shot?
- Why is the person in a car?
- Where are they going?
- Who is driving?
- What happen's next?

As in Barthes' theory, there are many enigmas created through this 4 second video I have composed. The purpose of 'looping' the video is to visually engage the audience as they may question why I have not used the traditional way of presenting a video. The looping of the video stops the audience from experiencing an abrupt end to the video, I have decided to not tie off the enigmas because it keeps the viewer guessing and encourages them to project their own opinions on the matter.
